NEW DAVIDOFF FLAGSHIP STORE

Davidoff of Geneva’s Madison Avenue Flagship Store Moving One Block South

New York, NY, December 20, 2010 Luxury tobacco company Davidoff of Geneva has announced the new location for their Madison Avenue flagship store at 515 Madison Avenue at the corner of 53rd St on Manhattan’s East Side, one block south of their current location. Davidoff of Geneva opened their first U.S. Flagship store in 1987 at 535 Madison Avenue in a mid-block location. In 2000, the store relocated within the building to its current corner location at East 54th Street. The store is scheduled to open in early spring of 2011.

General Manager for Davidoff’s New York City operations, Michael Herklots said, “We are extremely excited about our new store and continuing to provide our customers with the finest products, service and experience that can only be found in a Davidoff shop as we’ve done for over twenty years in Manhattan. We are fully committed to our loyal and valued customers who visit us in New York City from the neighborhood and around the world.”

Davidoff of Geneva purchased its second store at The Shops at Columbus Circle in the Time Warner Center (previously operating as a franchise since 2004) as well as De La Concha on Avenue of the Americas in 2006.

Out of the Humidor: Zino Chateau

There is a new Zino in town.  We're not sure how long it will be here or when we'll get more, but the good news is we have a few... VERY few!  The Zino Chateau will officially launch some time in the future... however before it does, the Davidoff stores in New York City and our customers are fortunate to get a little sneek peek into this delicious new direction and new brand extension.

The Zino Chateau is made by Davidoff in the Dominican Republic.  It features all aged Dominican filler tobaccos including Piloto Cubano, San Vicente and Criollo.  The binder is a specially fermented Dominican Olor, and the cigar is finished with a gorgeous Ecuadorian-grown Connecticut wrapper.

The cigars are really beautiful, both in look and taste.  They have a wonderfully creamy character with a hint of spice right from the beginning.  The rich smoke has a touch of sweetness and is quite complex with lingering spiciness, nuts and a touch of earth.

The robusto-sized cigars are available while they last in boxes of ten cigars for $85 per box plus applicable taxes.  Contact a NY Davidoff Store now!

Proposed Smoking Ban in Parks and Beaches

The Mayor of New York City is at it again.  The former smoker is supporting legislation to ban smoking from all of New York City's 29,000 acres of parks and 14 miles of beaches.  The argument for this particular measure is backed by unspecific "studies" and "experts" and uses both health risks and littering as the major arguments for the case.

It is absurd to believe that the second hand smoke in a park is more dangerous than the already present pollutants from car and truck exhaust, restaurant hoods, street vendors, etc...  And there are already strict laws forbidding littering.

There is a hearing on Thursday, October 14 at City Hall.  Please take the time between now and then to express your opposition to this ridiculous legislation.

2010 Trade Show Around the Corner.

In just a few days, I'll be boarding a Delta flight bound for New Orleans to attend the 2010 International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers annual convention at the Ernest N Morial Convention Center.  The first time I attended the show in New Orleans was just a month before Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005.  Since then I've been back almost every year to support and attend Emeril Lagasse's Carnivale du Vin.  Last year's trade show was in New Orleans and we're returning again this year since the accomodating folks of NOLA are willing to let us smoke on the show floor.

I'm always reminded as the show nears some of the great launches of IPCPR's past (formerly called RTDA). The first show I attended was in Nashville in 2003. For me, the hottest release of that year was the La Aurora Cien AƱos.
A Dominican Puro, it was handed out in the corona format and I still remember what a unique departure that flavor was from the standard La Aurora line.  A limited production, we have only a few remaining cigars left from that incredible release; now with the age they're simply incredible!

In 2004 we returned to Las Vegas, as we do normally every other year. While there were many exciting new cigars, one of the stars of the show was the Padron 1926 40th Anniversary.  Padron is one of the few companies that does not launch new products year after year.  Maybe a new size, or perhaps a new sampler- but this was a new limited edition in the 1926 series to commemorate the 40 years of Padron in the United States.  Since then they've released several other incredible new and limited cigars, but the 40th Anniversary really threw the industry for a loop.  And giving credit where credit is due, the cigar ultimately won "Cigar of the Year" by CigarAficionado magazine.

In 2005 we trecked down to New Orleans, LA.  Little did we know that in just a few weeks, Hurricane Katrina would destroy the very streets we were walking on.  In fact, the convention center that hosted us served as a relief center.  The 2005 show introduced a new concept for Ashton.  The ESG (Estate Sun Grown) celebrated their 20th year in business.

The churchill-sized cigar would be available in limited quantities and ultimately be the first in a limited series of cigars to be launched over the next five years... each year a new size would join the ranks of the ESG collection celebrating each year through 25 years.  Made by the Fuente family in Dominican Republic, the ESG uses a Dominican-grown wrapper from Chateau de la Fuente.  The blend was created by Carlos Fuente, Jr.

In 2006 we returned to Las Vegas.  2006 also marked the 100th Anniversary of the year Zino Davidoff was born.  Though every year Davidoff releases a new special product at the show, this year was particularly special.  The Davidoff Diademas Finas has become one of the most sought after cigars of the last ten years.  Long since sold out- customers and collectors are constantly looking for the Diademas Finas and its little brother, the 100th Anniversary Robusto.  If you can find any... buy them!

In 2007, the annual trade show descended onto the city of Houston, TX.  I really enjoyed Houston.  It's a fun town with great restaurants, and great accessibility to everything.  The Avo brand released the Avo 787.  Though AVO cigars have been available for many years, and there were already several different lines as well as a collection of annual limited editions, the 787 line was different.

First, the line was designed to only be available in Brick & Mortar stores... not available online or through catalogs.  Additionally, the line was inspired by the success of the 2002 Avo limited Edition "Avo 22".  Though not identical (it couldn't be, since the Avo 22 was a unique blend made entirely of tobacco from 1998 and no tobacco was left), it was quite reminiscent of the balance and sophistication of the Avo 22.  Three sizes were launched at the time, a Robusto, Toro and the original "22" format perfecto.  New sizes have been added since.

The 2008 industry trade show got an update in the organization's name, from RTDA (Retail Tobacco Dealers of America) to IPCPR (International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers).  We're still getting used to it.  Nevertheless, the 2008 Las Vegas show was a success as always.  Since 2006, Litto Gomez had been introducing his "Factory Press" series- a cigar that was severely box-pressed, and came shipped in the press itself.  The Factory Press III debuted at the show and was my favorite of the three releases.  At 6.25" x 58 it is a serious cigar.  It's wrapped in a Connecticut-Broadleaf Maduro wrapper, and featured a Nicaraguan binder with Dominican fillers from Litto's La Canela Farm.

Finally, last year's show stealer at the 2009 New Orleans convention was the Queada 35th Anniversary.  Thsi was the first cigar to bear the Quesada brand name.  It also marked the introduction of the Quesada family's sixth generation of cigar makers to the industry.  Though they've been active and involved since a young age, Quesada patriarch, Manuel Quesada handed the reigns over to the "young ones" to have a go for themselves.  They knocked it out of the park!

At 6" x 49, this box pressed toro was begging to be smoked.  Only 10,000 boxes of 20 cigars were available.  And they sold out within the first 36 hours of the show.  We were fortunate enough to premiere this cigar at our Madison Avenue location last year.  Click here to read my blog on the event. The unique Ecuadorian-grown Arapiraca wrapper really made this cigar stand out!  If you can find any... buy them.  FYI- the Quesada Tributo is now available.  Check out my Haute Living piece on the new release.

SO- now it's time to prepare for the 2010 release.  I'm quite sure it will be filled with countless new cigars and accessories as well as opportunities to catch up with my fellow retailers and favorite manufacturers.  Stay tuned for updates!

NY Legislators pass Increase in OTP tax

Despite the tireless efforts of the New York Tobacconists Association, New York State Legislators foolishly and irresponsilbly passed an emergency "extender bill" on June 21, 2010 that raises the OTP (Other Tobacco Tax) from its current 46% of wholesale to 75% of wholesale.  Just over a year ago, the same tax was raised from 37% at the time to the current 46%.  Although it was clearly outlined to the State Legislators that this tax is not only revenue negative but would be devastating to the countless small businesses throughout New York State, they decided to turn their back on New Yorkers and push the tax through anyway.

It should be noted that taxes are collected in the state in which the consumer takes ownership of the goods.  TO OUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS outside of NY State, this type of ridiculous over-taxation can no doubt mislead other State Leaders into thinking this is actually a good idea, so please be sure you are following the budget discussions in your state.

If you have not already done so, you should also consider joining the CRA.  The Cigar Rights of America, though still relatively new organization, has been a driving force to helping states form their own organizations, as well as spreading the word on a national level as to what's happening state to state. http://www.cigarrights.org/

Even today, a final budget is still not passed and Governor Paterson continues to threaten Legislators and New Yorkers with a Government shutdown if a final budget... actually, his budget... isn't passed.

On June 18, the New York Tobacconists Association held a press conference at our sister store, De La Concha.  Here is the coverage from that event. http://gothamgr.com/new-york-tobacconists-speak-out-against-increased-otp-tax/

Rest assured, we have not given up our battle against this egregious taxation.  We will continue to show the negative impact this tax has on State revenue, and will hold these legislators accountable for that loss as well as the loss of jobs this tax will cause state-wide as small business will be forced to close their doors.

REMINDER! IT IS NEVER TO LATE TO CONTACT New York's "Leaders".

Governor Paterson's Proposed Tax Hike on Tobacco is Outrageous, Irresponsible and Revenue Negative.

Ignoring once again the crippling financial burdens facing New York’s small businesses, the newest proposal by Governor Paterson to increase the Other Tobacco Products (“OTP”) tax from its current 46% of wholesale to 75% is outrageous, irresponsible and revenue negative for the State.

Just over a year ago, the State of New York implemented an OTP tax increase from 37% of wholesale to 46% of wholesale. This increase put New York State’s OTP tax significantly higher than the OTP tax of neighboring states. Comparing the first quarter of 2010 to 2009, Professional Tobacconists across the state of New York lost a devastating 20-30% in customer transactions. But don’t be fooled, these customers have not quit enjoying their premium cigars or pipe tobaccos, rather they simply buy their tobacco elsewhere, either in a neighboring state or online. Further increasing the OTP tax will only continue to drive customers away from New York, resulting in a loss of not only OTP tax but also sales tax, as well as much needed revenue for already struggling small businesses, many that are small family owned shops passed down through generations.

Nationally, the average price of a premium cigar is between $8.00 and $12.00, but for New Yorkers a $10 cigar costs $12.30, 23% higher because of current tobacco taxes (46%). With the proposed tax increase, that same cigar will cost New Yorkers $13.75. If that doesn’t seem significant at first glance, this increases the cost of a box of these cigars (25 cigars per box) from $307.50 at the current rate to $343.75 at the proposed 75% in New York State. But here’s the kicker; drive to Connecticut (27.5% OTP) and that same box of cigars will cost $284.38; a savings of $59.37 for New Yorkers. Worse, with a visit to nearby Pennsylvania (0.00% OTP) the very same box of cigars costs just $250, which saves the consumer $93.75 per box at a 100% loss to New York State and its small businesses. Add to that the aggressive discount tactics by out-of-state retailers for high volume purchases, and Governor Paterson’s proposed revenue will disappear; taking with it hundreds of small businesses and more than a thousand much needed jobs.

Once this proves to be revenue negative, which industry’s small businesses will New York State target next? It is time for New York State to think responsibly, economically and long term. More importantly, it is time to think competitively as a state. And as a State we need to tax in a manner that will cultivate existing customers and attract new customers to our local businesses so that they can survive and thrive for years to come. We can’t keep allowing our government -- OUR government-- to continue to raise taxes with impunity on the legal products we enjoy, in short-sighted and ill-conceived attempts to make spreadsheets more attractive, and kick the ball of problems forward to next year only for the State to implement another tax on another industry, which will once again fail, and leave us in the same situation… broke.

CRA is urging all members contact the legislative leadership noted below, and the governor's office, to voice your opposition to this tax increase on cigars.
