Nat Sherman Timeless Collection on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 Two Consecutive Years.

CIGAR AFICIONADO MAGAZINE HONORS THE NAT SHERMAN TIMELESS COLLECTION AS ONE OF 2013’S ‘TOP 25 CIGARS’

NEW YORK, NY (December 20, 2013) - Nat Sherman, Tobacconist to the World since 1930, is thrilled to share that Cigar Aficionado has selected the Nat Sherman Timeless Collection Divinos as one of the ‘Top 25 Cigars’ of 2013.  This is the second consecutive appearance of the Nat Sherman Timeless Collection on the annual list.  Cigar Aficionado has proclaimed the cigar as “bringing a vibrant new flavor and energy to the Nat Sherman name,” ranking the cigar as No. 20 on its coveted annual list.

Cigar Aficionado’s rigorous decision-making process begins by looking at more than 700 cigars tested throughout the year in both Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider. The top-scoring smokes go through a further blind-tasting where Cigar Aficionado’s tasting coordinator purchases cigars from known retailers, removes the bands and orchestrates an entirely new tasting. After multiple rounds, the publication arrives at its coveted list of the Top 25.  Per Cigar Aficionado, “The Top 25 list contains cigars from a host of countries, with a wide range of flavors and prices. They are a superb group.”

Once again we’re thrilled to be included on this prestigious list. Nothing is more gratifying than knowing that our products are being enjoyed and appreciated,” said Bill Sherman, Executive Vice President of Nat Sherman. Michael Herklots, Executive Director of Retail and Brand Development, added, “I think Cigar Aficionado really said it best themselves: ‘The brand has staying power.’ Nat Sherman has been an industry innovator for over 80 years, and we remain committed to making the finest products possible.”

The Nat Sherman Timeless Collection (Dominican) Divinos
The Divinos is a perfecto format, tapered at both ends. This figurado is an incredibly difficult format to make as the proportions of filler tobaccos must be positioned in a way to draw properly and burn evenly. When the cigar is first lit, the initial flavors come from the wrapper and binder, and as the cigar increases in ring gauge, the flavor changes with every single puff as more and more filler tobaccos are incorporated into the experience. The Nat Sherman Timeless Divinos is full bodied, with medium strength and unarguable complexity- and though a small format at five inches, commands incredible time and attention to truly appreciate the full experience. – Michael Sherman, Executive Director of Retail and Brand Development, Nat Sherman International

Super Lanceros NOW AVAILABLE!

NAT SHERMAN INTERNATIONAL TO RELEASE TRIO OF “SUPER LANCEROS”
NEW YORK, NY (December 18, 2013)Nat Sherman, Tobacconist to the World since 1930, is offering a limited production format in three of their most popular blends from the Dominican Republic, The Timeless Collection, 1930 and Sterling. The Super Lancero measures 8” long with a 38 ring gauge, a half inch longer than a traditional Laguito No. 1 Vitola.
“The lancero format is an extremely elegant size, allowing the smoke’s flavor to remain focused, without incorporating as much air into the smoke as larger ring gauges do,” said Michael Herklots, Executive Director of Retail and Brand Development, Nat Sherman International. “The extra length of the cigar gives greater opportunity for the experience and flavors to change and develop from start to finish, while keeping the smoke cooler longer.”
“The Super Lanceros are manufactured in limited quantities at The Quesada Factory (formerly known as MATASA) in Licey, Dominican Republic, just outside of Santiago. Only one team of rollers is tasked with making this coveted size,” said William Sherman, Executive Vice President of Nat Sherman. “Small ring gauges are among the hardest vitolas to make, as it’s very easy to under-fill or over-fill. We have one expert team in the factory that is carefully bunching and rolling these cigars to ensure they’ll draw and burn perfectly.”
Each Super Lancero will come packed in boxes of ten cigars. The Timeless Super Lancero has a Suggested Retail Price of $110 per box, the 1930 Super Lancero is $150 per box and the Sterling Super Lancero is $180 per box plus applicable taxes.
The first shipment will be available in select retailers by the middle of January 2014, and will be made available throughout the year in limited quantities as production permits.

Fall Weather Smokes

"...Full cigar flavor without the full cigar time commitment."

As the days get shorter, often times our cigars get shorter too. Cooler temperatures make it less enticing to enjoy a Churchill or Double Corona, and the end of the summer dress-code is also the end of summer Friday's and early beach weekend departures. But fortunately, we offer a number of great small format options that deliver full cigar flavor and enjoyment without the full cigar time commitment. Stop by your favorite tobacconist and try pick up a few of these great short cigars... and remember to still make a little time to experience Nat Sherman.

Curated Pairing Program at Botanica

Botanica, is a specialty cocktail bar modeled after the lounge of a Bourgeois Venetian Hotel.  Located adjacent to the pop-up, they will be featuring an exclusive selection of cocktail and cigar pairings, curated by our own Michael Herklots.

Dark Rye Collins Nat Sherman Timeless Especiale (Dominican Republic)
This refreshing cocktail balances the peppery rye with the sweetness of the simple syrup and the acid of the lemon juice. The Nat Sherman Timeless Especiale embraces the earthiness of the rye, but also highlights some of the underlying sweetness of the tobacco. The narrow ring guage of this cigar concentrates its character and allows for change start to finish. In the beginning, the cocktail will be front and center, but as you near the end of the cigar, it will clearly take the leading role.

Blood in the Sand
Nat Sherman Metropolitan Angler (Dominican Republic)
This Manhattan-esque cocktail served on the rocks is a cold, refreshing burst of rich delicious components mixed in equal parts. While the whiskey and vermouth still remain a driving force in flavor just in the cocktail, the Metropolitan Angler is smooth, and slightly drying, with a creamy, woodsy note and a touch of citrus on the palate. When enjoyed with the cocktail, the orange twist essence is enhanced on the finish. Additionally, the shorter narrower format of the cigar allows the cigar to burn slightly hotter – which plays against the cocktail’s cool temperature.

Sazerac
Nat Sherman Metropolitan Maduro Union (Dominican Republic)
This dark robusto uses a wrapper leaf that has been fermented at a higher temperature for a longer time creating a “bitter sweet” note on the finish that embraces the bitters, but also brings out the delicate Absenthe note.

Paddle Boat
Nat Sherman Timeless 546 (Nicaragua)
This Nicaraguan puro goes hand in hand with the bourbon, with rich hearty flavors of white pepper and a touch of earth. However, the highlight in this combination is the chocolate and espresso notes of the cigar that marry perfect with the Crème de Cacao, and the dark fruit notes of the cigar that compliment that raspberry.

Hemingway
Host Hobart (Honduras)
As refreshing and accessible as a pairing can be, the sweetness of the cigar offers a great base to welcome the rum, and allows the acid of the Grapefruit juice to really act as balancing agent.

Plantation
1930 Corona (Dominican Republic)
A great example of “dialogue” in a pairing, these two beauties literally have a “conversation” on your palate. Sip the cocktail and enjoy the masterful balance of the ingredients. Then take a puff, and pay attention as you feel the stimulation on your palate change. The cigars bright spices will “fill in the blanks” on your palate. After a sip, pay attention to the “finish”… as the Basil notes linger, prompting you to start from the beginning again. Sip, puff, enjoy, repeat.
--
Whiskey Neat: While there is something to be said for the cocktail culture, and pushing the limits of mixing dynamically different ingredients to result in harmony and balance, enjoying spirits neat allows you to not only enjoy the spirit’s pure character, but it also slows down the process… moving from “drinking” to “sipping”.  Neat spirits also offer a bit of heat on the palate due to the alcohol.  For this reason, larger format cigars are a great match, as they stay cooler longer, providing a contrast to the spirit.  In addition, the cigar’s length demands the cigar change and develop more from start to finish… embracing the time and attention the neat spirits deserve. -MH

Widow Jane Bourbon 7 years
Nat Sherman Timeless Churchill
(Dominican Republic)
This cigar is wonderfully complex. It starts off cool and smooth, with a subtle spicy notes. The whiskey’s more obvious spiced notes play into the cigar’s prelude. As the cigar burns, the “color” of flavors get darker… working with the whiskey’s spice, but also pairing more with the vanilla and caramel flavors of the whiskey. As the cigar nears its end, it is significantly more earthy and charry, allowing the brighter minerality of the whiskey to stand out.

Widow Jane Rye
Nat Sherman Timeless 749 (Nicaragua)
This box-pressed Nicaraguan puro starts with notes of white pepper and cocoa powder, in a cool creamy smoke that counters the initial spice of the Rye. As the cigar burns, more earth and leather is evident in the smoke, becoming more and more similar to the whiskey’s core notes. An interesting commonality between the two is a fruit not. Though subtle when each is enjoyed on their own; together, the fruit is slightly more obvious. As the 749 enters its final third, the cigar and the whiskey are nearly one in the same.

Known as The Foundation Spirit of New York, Widow Jane is distilled with the pure, sweet water of the Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale, NY, whose limestone quarry was essential in building both the Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State Building.

"We are extremely excited to partner with Daniel and his team at Cacao Prieto for Nat Sherman’s inaugural Pop-Up concept," said Michael Herklots, Executive Director of Brand and Retail Development at Nat Sherman. "We strongly support Daniel’s vision for the distillery, and as both Cacao Prieto and Nat Sherman are New York routed - family-owned and operated, there is no better partner. We look forward to bringing the Nat Sherman experience to Cacao Prieto’s clientele, and the entirety of the Red Hook community.”

Botanica will join in on the collaborative concept with Nat Sherman, featuring an exclusive list of cocktail and cigar pairings, curated by Michael Herklots, throughout the duration of the pop-up.

"We are truly thrilled to offer the Nat Sherman experience at our Brooklyn facility," said, Daniel Prieto Preston, Founder of Cacao Prieto. "We are always looking for ways to innovate what we do here in Redhook, so it’s an honor to partner with Nat Sherman to bring their first Pop Up to fruition.”

Killingly High School Career Pathway Celebration

Killingly High School Career Pathway Celebration

By Karen Lagace, Career Pathways Coordinator, Killingly High School

On Tuesday, May 21, 2013, 74 students, all of whom have completed one or more of the 22 Career Pathways offered at Killingly High School, were recognized at the annual Career Pathways Celebration. These students will also be given a Career Pathway medallion and will be recognized at their graduation.

Killingly High School Career Pathways lead students in the direction of their personal and professional goals, giving them the opportunity to earn free college credit while in high school, develop leadership skills, and explore career options. Students must take a series of courses including math, technology, communication, science as well as courses within their specific career path to be considered a Career Pathway Completer.

During this year's celebration, fourteen KHS alumni were inducted into the newly formed Career Pathway Hall of Fame. The alumni, who were chosen by their Career Pathway teachers, have completed their post-secondary education and/or acquired a job in their field. The successes these alumni have experienced since graduating KHS were very inspiring. One alumnus in particular, Michael Herklots, a 1998 KHS graduate and a 2002 graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, has been very successful in his career as well as in supporting his alma mater Killingly High School.

Every year, Herklots holds two events to celebrate his birthday and raise money for the KHS Learning for Life Fund, which was set up to supplement funding for the Career Pathways Programs. He attracts guests from throughout the United States and as far as The Dominican Republic, Honduras and Nicaragua. At his birthday celebration he raffles and auctions items, which have been donated by his friends and associates. “This isn’t my generosity, I’m just the host. It is about the generosity of hundreds of people from around the world who believe in the young people in Killingly” said Herklots. Nine years ago at his first birthday auction he raised $2500 for the Learning for Life Fund. Every year the fundraising donations grew and grew. Last year he raised $75,000 and this year at the Career Pathway Celebration, Herklots presented a donation to Karen Lagace, KHS Career Coordinator, in the amount of $85,000 for the Learning for Life Fund, bringing the total amount raised since 2005 to $330,000.

Michael Herklots is truly an inspirational alumnus and motivational speaker! He has inspired KHS students and alumni to not only strive to be their best, but to give back in any way they can to their school. One 2009 KHS alumnus, who has a degree in Nursing, was so inspired by the Celebration and Michael Herklots, that she wants to go back to school to become a teacher and help reinstate the Allied Health Pathway in the future. Another, alumnus from the class of 2011 would like to follow in Michael Herklots footsteps and also hold fundraisers to help support the Learning for Life Fund.

The Learning for Life fund is a supplemental fund, which helps KHS Career Pathways partially fund student organization competitions, job shadows, speakers, field trips and events within each of the 22 Career Pathways. Students must fundraise for any of these events or activities and then apply to supplement for any funds they could not raise. Students greatly benefit from the donations that support KHS Career Pathways, which enable them to explore their personal career path!

Michael Herklots Annual Birthday Raises $85,000 for Killingly Programs

Annual Birthday Fundraiser breaks record with $85,000 for KHS Learning for Life

Breaking the 2011 fundraising record by $10,000, this year's Annual Birthday Party Fundraiser brought in $85,000 for the Killingly High School Learning for Life Fund, bringing the total amount raised to $330,000 since 2005. Drawing incredible support in donations from the Premium Cigar industry, as well as the worlds of culinary, wine, travel and more... the raffles and auctions were the driving force behind raising tens of thousands of dollars again this year.

Of course, without the support of attendees, there would be no one to buy raffle tickets and bid at auctions. Roughly 200 attendees attended the two events.Over $25,000 in products were donated to help support the events’ raffles, silent auctions and live auctions. Further, two“experiential” auction lots accounted for $30,000 themselves.A “Private Cooking Class with Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian for ten people” fetched $10,000 and a private “Night at the Nat Sherman Townhouse with Chef Emeril Lagasse for 20 people” sold for $20,000. Additional funds were raised in an online charity auction by charitybuzz.com plus an ongoing push for donations.

“I simply can’t express how much I appreciate the incredible generosity I receive, year after year, for my annual birthday parties to support the KHS Learning for Life Fund,” said Herklots, addressing the audience at the annual Career Pathways Celebration at Killingly Hgh School on May 21. Herklots went on to share, “Killingly is my home town. No matter where I live, where I travel... I will be forever grateful to this community. Though i live in New York City- my home will always be Killingly.”All money raised goes directly to the Killingly High School Learning for Life Fund, Herklots' hometown high school alma mater in Danielson, CT.

Come celebrate the success of the Dominican-made Nat Sherman Timeless Collection with the Sherman Family and the Quesada Family!

For the past fifteen months, we have worked incredibly hard developing the Nat Sherman Timeless Collection.  And while we are still working hard, it's important that we take a moment to look back and celebrate the success of this project.

Please join us at the Nat Sherman Townhouse on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, from 7:30-9:30pm.  Admission is $50 per person.  Attendence is EXTREMELY limited. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are non-refundable.  Call 646-442-1850 for more information.
