It's that time again for my annual birthday party/fundraiser event. This is the 6th year I'm raising money for my high school Alma Mater, Killingly High School in Danielson, CT. Since 2005, my birthday event has raised over $70,000 for the Learning for Life Fund, which helps supplement, the costs of KHS's School-to-Career program. http://www.killinglyschools.org/ It's a small town public school that's funded by a very limited education budget financed by generous yet maxed-out taxpayers, many on fixed incomes. This past year has been incredibly challenging for them to maintain programs, and even provide adequate resources like computers. They were only able to do so because of the funding this event generates through your support and generosity. The Dominican Republic is known as cigar country. If you have any doubt in the merrits of such a nickname, than clearly you have never visited. Located on the island of Hispanola, which it shares with Haiti, the Dominican Republic produces some of the finest cigars available anywhere in the world. In a continuing effort to drive this message home ProCigar, a consortium of 6 of the leading Dominican manufacturers, hosted its third annual ProCigar Festival. This year also marked the 3rd year I was fortunate enough to host a group to experience this incredible trip. The Festival begain on February 14 in La Romana with tours of Tabacalera de Garcia (home of Romeo y Julieta and Montecristo) as well as a golf competition. Unfortunately I was unable to participate in the first couple days, but the reviews from folks who attended said it was first class. On Monday, March 16, 2009, over sixty cigar enthusiasts joined us at the Madison Avenue store to celebrate Avo Uvezian's 83rd Birthday. In his signature white Brioni Suit and straw hat, Avo was his gracious enthusiastic self, signing boxes of his brand new Avo Companeros and posing for pictures. An incredible dinner was prepared and served by our dear friends and neighbors at Rothmann's Steakhouse and paired with wines selected by Andrew Bell , President of the American Sommelier Association. This was the very first time the Avo Uvezian 2009 Limited Edition Companeros had been smoked by the general public. More details on the cigar are below!
