Pre-Castro "Cubans" at Nat Sherman

The Nat Sherman Townhouse presents...Cuervo y Sobrinos Vintage Watches.

How's this for "timing?" In honor of December 25th take 25% off these beautiful Cuervo y Sobrinos vintage watches this Tuesday only, December 18th. These "legal Cubans" were sold in Havana from the early 1900's to 1961. They have Swiss movements which have been lovingly restored and are fully guaranteed for six months. All feature the word "HABANA" on the dial and caseback. And each is unique, whether it's a solid 18K gold chronograph or simple stainless steel dress watch. With these one day savings, prices begin at under $800.00, the lowest we have ever offered. During this special one day only holiday showing, watch curator Bill McCuddy will be offering pieces from his own C/S collection also at a 25% savings. Trade-ins and appraisals will also be offered. Your personal watch will also be polished while you examine these unique timepieces. And since these vintage timepieces make exceptional gifts, the first person to buy two watches will receive a burlwood Cuervo Sobrinos humidor. This remarkable opportunity is this Tuesday, December 18th from 1:00pm to 6:00pm. And since the most desirable pieces will go early, "time" is of the essence.

The Nat Sherman Townhouse is located at 12 East 42nd Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues in Manhattan.

FAQ: How much flavor comes from the wrapper?

FAQ: How much flavor comes from the wrapper?

A: Well, unfortunately that's a tough one to answer. The correct answer is "it depends". What is NOT a correct answer is an exact one. Why? Because it simply can't be. A premium cigar has three "parts": The wrapper, binder and filler. The wrapper is one leaf, which means it's one seed variety from a specific region. The binder is also one unique leaf. The filler tobaccos, are usually a blend of different types of tobaccos often from different regions and different positions on the plant (called primings). The filler tobaccos are positioned in the hand with the strongest tobaccos in the center, surrounded by milder tobaccos to ensure even combustion. The binder is applied to hold the fillers together, and after being pressed in a mold, the wrapper is applied over the bunch.

In the picture above, there are four cigars. The two cigars on the far left are the Metropolitan Banker Maduro and Natural, and on the right the Angler Maduro and Natural. The two darker cigars use a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper, and the two lighter a Connecticut Shade wrapper. The two Bankers (5" x 70) use an identical blend of filler and binder tobaccos in the same proportions to accommodate the incredibly large ring gauge. The two Anglers (5.5" x 43) also share the same filler and binder relationship between the two of them.

Smoking the Maduro against the Natural version in the two examples, it is quite easy to detect the rich, bittersweet characteristic of the Broadleaf wrapper, compared to the significantly lighter, brighter notes of the Connecticut shade, but equally interesting is to compare the twoMaduros side by side and the two Naturals. The Angler Maduro is the richest of the four, since the influence of the rich Maduro wrapper can take center stage with the smaller ring gauge. The Banker Maduro has similar character, but smokes rounder and creamier- as more air combines with the smoke, and there is physically much more filler tobacco burning to counter and balance the wrapper's dominance.

NEW Nat Sherman Bench Collection NOW AVAILABLE

Nat Sherman Bench Collection 2012
by La Aurora

La Aurora, the Dominican Republic's oldest cigar factory, has teamed up with Nat Sherman to offer two very special cigars to the Tobacconist's loyal customers at their Flagship Townhouse Store.

These cigars were manufactured in 2007 in their Dominican factory.  The blends were part of the development of the La Aurora Excepcionales, a cigar made exclusively available to a small group of New York City retailers.

"We had three blends we really liked", said Michael Herklots, who worked closely with La Aurora's Manuel Inoa on the project.  "Ultimately we chose a blend for the Excepcionales, but there were two other blends that we really liked and decided to make a very small production of them to use sometime in the future." On a recent visit to La Aurora, Herklots inquired about the small production of the other two blends.  And, fortunately for Nat Sherman, they were resting in the company's vast aging room.

La Aurora agreed to make the small amount of cigars avialable for Nat Sherman's exclusive Bench Collection- a series of small production cigars that use harder-to-get tobaccos in more artisenal style blends.

Both cigars are available in limited quantities boxes of 20 cigars

Annual Birthday Fundraiser brings $75,000 for KHS Learning for Life

Birthday Fundraiser for Killingly High School Programs Raises $75,000
A Two-Night Affair Supported by the Cigar Industry

New York, NY (May 30, 2012) – Held in New York City on May 7 and May 8, 2012, the Eighth Annual Michael Herklots Birthday Fundraiser for Killingly High School’s Learning for Life Fund raised $75,000. Killingly High School Class of 1998 Alumnus and Nat Sherman Executive Director of Retail and Brand Development, Herklots raised more than a quarter million dollars for the fund over the course of eight years.

The annual events, which include live and silent auctions, raffles, a dinner and premium cigars, have not only welcomed tastemakers the likes of Chefs Emeril Lagasse and Wayne Nish, Actors Tony Darrow, Arthur Nascarella and Frank Vincent, but also drawn overwhelming support from the cigar industry. This year’s 200 guests included Ariel Ditkowich of La Sirena Cigars, Bill Paley of La Palina, Guillermo Leon of La Aurora, Gustavo Plasencia of Plasencia Cigars, Litto Gomez of La Flor Dominicana, Luis Falto of La Garita Cigar Company, Mike Bellody of El Tiante Cigar Group, Nestor Miranda of Miami Cigar, Raquel, Patricia and Hostos Quesada of MATASA, Phillip Wynn of Felipe Gregorio, and many more.

It is our responsibility to provide today’s youth with the tools that will make them tomorrow’s leaders. ”

Donors to the Learning for Life Fund receive regular newsletters providing updates on the fantastic achievements of the School-to-Career program, as well as a financial breakdown on how money is being used.

School-to-Career Coordinator at Killingly High School Robert Brennan, said, “We are truly grateful for Michael Herklots and his constituents’ benevolence to the School-to-Career Program over the past five years. It has, without a doubt, sustained our exemplary career pathways.”
